Your Shopify homepage is your digital storefront. Visitors decide in less than 3 seconds whether they trust you enough to stay — and most stores are silently failing this test every single day.
After auditing over 100 Shopify stores, we see the same critical mistakes again and again. Here they are — and more importantly, how to fix them.
1. No Clear Value Proposition Above the Fold
The most common mistake: visitors land on your homepage and have no idea what you sell or why they should care. Your hero section should answer three questions immediately — what you sell, who it's for, and why it's different. Don't make people scroll to find out.
2. Stock Photos That Feel Fake
Generic, polished stock imagery kills trust. Real product photos, lifestyle shots with your actual customers, and authentic imagery convert dramatically better than anything you find on Unsplash or Shutterstock. Invest in a simple product shoot — it pays for itself in conversion lift.
3. Too Many CTAs Competing for Attention
If everything is a priority, nothing is. We've seen homepages with 6, 7, even 10 different calls-to-action. Pick one primary CTA for each section and let it breathe. Clarity converts.
4. Slow Load Speed
Google reports that a 1-second delay in mobile load time reduces conversions by up to 20%. Yet most Shopify stores are bloated with unoptimized images, redundant apps, and heavy scripts. Run your store through PageSpeed Insights right now. If you're below 70 on mobile, you're leaving money on the table.
5. No Social Proof Near the Top
Trust signals — star ratings, review counts, press logos, customer photos — should appear within the first two scrolls. Don't bury them at the bottom of the page where only engaged visitors ever see them.
6. Navigation That Tries to Do Too Much
More than 5-6 top-level navigation items creates decision paralysis. Audit your nav and ruthlessly cut anything that doesn't directly serve a buyer's journey. Your header should guide — not overwhelm.
7. No Mobile Optimization
Over 70% of e-commerce traffic is mobile. If you're designing and testing on desktop only, you're optimizing for the minority. Every homepage element — font sizes, tap targets, image aspect ratios, CTA button size — needs to be validated on a real phone.
Once your homepage is fixed, your product pages are next — see our product page anatomy checklist.
